“You can trust us to stick to you through thick and thin – to the bitter end. And you can trust us to keep any secret of yours – closer than you yourself keep it. But you cannot trust us to let you face trouble alone, and go off without a word. We are your friends, Frodo. Anyway: there it is. We know most of what Gandalf has told you. We know a good deal about the ring. We are horribly afraid — but we are coming with you; or following you like hounds.”

I work in early years and went on a fascinating course today about how relationships affect the brain. By the time a child is 3 years old the brain has reached 90% of its final mass. Look at the image above and you can see the huge difference in the brain of a child who has had a loving, nurturing, happy childhood and that of the child who has suffered huge neglect. The scary thing is that that childs brain will never recover, remember by this age it has reached almost its final mass, it wont ‘just take longer’ to develop, it has missed its major growth period. Yes we can provide support and resources to help that child through but the damage has been done and cant be reversed. Basically what I’m saying is never never never under-estimate how vitally important those early years are, and thankfully in Scotland we have realised this and the money and research being put into early years is increasing all the time. Harry Burns, the Chief medical officer for Scotland has stated that “we want Scotland to be the best place in the world to grow up”, and he understands that early years is vital in achieving this.
